Four Sicilian nursery rhymes : 3 tarì – lu cappeddu ci vulà – u peri di patacca – Minica

Sutta un peri di castagnu c’è Gesuzzu c’addumanna, addumanna tri tarì, cu la manu chi fa accussì.

Under a chestnut tree, there is the Baby Jesus who asks, ask for three tarì, with his hand doing this.

Sutta un peri di rosamarina c’è Gesuzzu chi camina, e simina lu furminteddu p’accattarisi lu cappeddu, lu cappeddu ci vulà, supra un monti ci vulà. Taliati comu è misu, comu un Re di Paradisu, taliati cumu sta, comu un Re di Maistà.

Under a rosemary tree there is the Baby Jesus who walks, and sows wheat to buy a hat, the hat flew, over a mountain it flew. Look at how he is placed, like a King of Heaven, look at how he is, like a King of Majesty.

Sutta un peri di patacca c’è Maria chi tira l’acqua e ni tira un quaticeddu pi dari a biviri o’ Bammineddu . ‘U Bammineddu si vagnau e Maria s’ingustiau . ‘U Bammineddu s’asciucau u e Maria si ni priau.

Under a patacca tree there is Maria who pulls the water and pulls a bucket to make the Baby Jesus drink. The Baby Jesus got wet and Maria was saddened. The Baby Jesus dried off and Maria rejoiced.

Oggi è duminica tagghiamu ‘a testa a Minica, Minicanun c’è, tagghiamu ‘a testa o’ Re. ‘U Re è malatu ,tagghiamu a testa o’ surdatu. ‘U surdatu è a la guerra e sbattemu ‘u culu ‘nterra. ‘Nterra c’è un chiuviddu e ni puncemu lu culiddu.

Today is Sunday, let’s cut the head off on Sunday.  Sunday is not here, let’s cut off the King’s head. The King is sick, let’s cut off the soldier’s head. The soldier is at war and we bang our asses on the ground. There is a nail on the ground and we sting our butt.
